Today, the Venus Flytraps participated in a fun read aloud activity. First, the class read the book Catch That Cookie by Hallie Durand and David Smalls. The book tells a tale of a Gingerbread Man who got loose in a school using fun rhyming words and silly clues. After finishing the book, the teachers told the Flytraps that a gingerbread man was sneaking around our school and it was their job to find where the Gingerbread Man was hiding. The class went on a scavenger hunt around GBS to find the missing "G-man." On their adventure, the Flytraps had to get help from Jane, Ida, and Nurse Stacey. Along the way, they visited the roof, the front desk, and the music room. When they received the last clue, the Flytraps figured out that the Gingerbread Man was actually resting in the Venus Flytrap classroom. They found him resting in the break area and celebrated their discovery. Lastly, the Flytraps created their own gingerbread men to play with the class gingerbread man. This past month, the Venus Flytraps had many special visitors. The Venus Flytraps welcomed family visitors to favorite books to the them. They enjoyed the different stories that were read aloud. Another visitor the Venus Flytraps welcomed was Brett the Vet. Brett the Vet explained what a veterinarian is, an animal doctor. He helps keep the animals healthy. Brett the Vet brought in shoe and hair covers that a doctor would wear when seeing an animal patient. He also brought in a stethoscope for all the Venus Flytraps to listen to their hearts. The Venus Flytraps enjoyed learning about veterinarians! Gabby, from Art Farm, also visited the Venus Flytraps. During this visit, Gabby taught them about different kinds of birds. They learned that birds are animals that have bones, wings, feathers, and lay eggs. As always, the Venus Flytraps were excited to meet the animals and get the chance to pet a dove, chicken, and parrot. They look forward to having more visitors throughout the year! The Venus Flytraps hosted their family members for the annual Gillen Brewer Thanksgiving Feast. During the celebration, the Venus Flytraps and their families enjoyed a delicious spread of food and shared their favorite balloons and floats. After reading the book Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet, the Venus Flytraps decorated their favorite balloons or floats from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The Venus Flytraps had fun sharing this special celebration with their families and teachers. Happy Thanksgiving! The Venus Flytraps welcomed all their grandparents into their classroom for Grandparents' Day! They were so excited to share all the fun activities around the classroom with their special visitors. With their grandparents', the Flytraps decorated picture frames and talked about their family traditions. It was so nice having all the grandparents and guests visit! Read Below to Find Out How We Chose Our Class Name! First, we reviewed the parts of a plant that we had learned in science. Then, we recalled what we knew about plants from seeing them in our homes and community. We further discussed parts of a plant, what plants need to grow, where plants grow, and the different types of plants. Next, we became “plant detectives” and observed and photographed plants in the communities near our homes. At school, we also put on our detective badges, got our magnifying glasses, and searched for plants in our community around Gillen Brewer School. We then made a list of the plants we found in both communities and compared them to one another. Then, we made a list of plants that interested us and wanted to learn more about. We discussed how trees help us meet our wants and needs. We also studied a wide variety of meat eating plants, including sundews, venus flytraps, and pitcher plants. Last, we narrowed down our plant choices and voted to become the Venus Flytraps.
Room 205 has been doing a lot of exploring on their quest to find a class name! They became plant detectives, wore badges, got magnifying glasses, then went for a walk around the neighborhood searching for all of the plants they could find. Students discovered various trees, bushes, flowers, grasses, potted plants in windows, and even a plant-filled rooftop greenhouse! As they spotted different plants, teachers took pictures of them to record the class's findings. After the class returned to school, they looked at the photographs and made even more observations about what the plants looked like, how many of each type they saw, and similarities to plants they have seen at home. Room 205's plant detectives are excited to continue investigating! Room 205 is excited to be back at Gillen Brewer and is getting ready for a fun-filled school year! Over the past few days, Room 205 has been working together to get to know the classroom and expectations. On the first day back, the students completed a photo scavenger hunt around the classroom to identify the important locations of classroom materials as well as where they can find the calendar, schedule, and math board. The students had a blast working together to complete the scavenger hunt checklist and taking pictures with their group! Room 205 has had a blast getting to know their teachers and their classmates, through a Get to Know Me pennant. On the pennant, the students shared about their families, favorite color and favorite shape. While sharing about themselves, the students also shared their favorite letters they like to write. This summer room 205's social studies essential question is How we communicate with one another through music? Room 205 began exploring communication by talking, reading, writing, and expressions. The students are very excited to learn about the ways one can communicate, especially through music! In addition, room 205 started swimming at Asphalt Green. They had a blast swimming and cannot wait to continue throughout the summer! |
